Students from Grade 4A were dressed in traditional Kerala attire and performed a beautiful "kaikottikali," which held the audience in rapt attention. The day is also marked by the women performing a dance around the Pookalam. This harvest festival lasts for ten days and culminates on the tenth day when families and friends get together to partake in a lavish feast called the "sadhya." It is celebrated to commemorate the Vamana avatara of Lord Vishnu and falls every year in the month of Malayalam (called Chingam, August or September). Mr Suresh spoke about the different aspects of the festival although of Hindu origin, people of all religions in Kerala celebrate Onam. The assembly started off with Mr Suresh and Ms Seena greeting the Junior School students and teachers in Malayalam. The stage was decorated with a circular pattern made of multi coloured flowers, called the "Pookalam.” The Junior School celebrated Onam, the famous festival of the state of Kerala, in the morning assembly on Tuesday 9 September.
